Can you tell us about your career journey and what sparked your interest in cybersecurity or the energy sector?

My career journey in cybersecurity has been both exciting and fulfilling. Over the past four months, I completed a training program on Cybersecurity for critical infrastructure, focusing on the energy sector, through Talent’s Cybersecurity for Energy program. This program, which followed my Master of Engineering degree at Carleton University in Infrastructure Protection and International Security (#IPIS), equipped me with practical skills in vulnerability assessment, incident response, and security gap assessment. This comprehensive training has solidified my interest and expertise in protecting critical infrastructure, particularly within the energy sector.

Tell us about your experience in the program. What did you find to be the most valuable part?

My experience in the program was incredibly enriching and comprehensive. I gained valuable insights into the critical role of cybersecurity in the energy industry, covering various types of cyber threats and operational technology (OT) systems, including SCADA, PLCs, ICS, and DCS. The courses equipped me with essential skills in vulnerability assessments, incident response, and security gap assessments, using industry-standard tools and frameworks. Overall, the hands-on experience and practical knowledge I gained have significantly enhanced my ability to protect critical infrastructure in the energy sector.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

One of my proudest accomplishments is my contribution to a complex project as a cybersecurity advisor, which significantly changed the way my company operates. This achievement required dedication, hard work, and perseverance, teaching me to make decisions with partial information and adapt priorities on the fly. It boosted my confidence and reinforced my belief in the importance of on-the-job learning. I encourage others to embrace challenges at work, as they are invaluable for personal and professional growth.

Where are you currently working? How did you land this role and where do you hope it takes you in the next 5 years?

Currently, I’m working at the National Bank of Canada, a role I secured through networking, targeted applications, and showcasing my relevant skills and experiences. Over the next five years, I aim to grow within the company, taking on more responsibilities and advancing to a leadership position. I plan to contribute significantly to our projects and initiatives while continuously developing my skills. Staying updated with industry trends is also a priority for me.
